My Impressions of the Sigma BF camera.

The Sigma Prime BF camera is an interesting camera. It’s small and minimalistic. I like the design and as a cinematographer, I appreciate having a camera that size that allows me to focus on the images that I want to capture, versus all of the bells and whistles that newer cameras market with. I think this camera is geared towards photographers that want something small that they can carry around with them. It’s full frame and paired with Sigma’s DG series lenses, those lenses give interesting aberrations that I really enjoy. It’s also really quiet. Like really really quiet. I couldn’t tell sometimes if I actually took the picture because there is no mechanical shutter. The lack of buttons is something that I really appreciate. It has a 240gb internal drive and you can charge the camera through the USB-C port. It can record 6k video but I didn’t even test that out as I would only use this as a photo camera.

The Sigma bf is great for designed and discovered photography.

Images below are taken with the Sigma BF and the Sigma 45mm DG lens.

The Designed Photography

I took the Sigma BF to Griffith Park to test out some of the features. I was specifically curious in the cinema picture profile. I shot in DNG + Jpeg which I think works is great to lean into a certain tone but retain all of the color information for post processing.

The Discovered + Portraits

This weekend, I had the Sigma BF with me and thought it was a great time to test out what it would feel like to carry the BF with me every where. It honestly feels like carrying around a larger phone with the actual quality of a high end camera. I say actual quality because phones can simulate depth of field and appear to have more depth and resolution but it doesn’t hold up when you compare actual sensor size, color rendition, etc.

I wish it had a viewfinder…

I miss having a viewfinder. I understand why the design team made the decision to lean more into a stylish, design that a viewfinder complicates. Some of the my favorite photos that i’ve taken have been with a phone that doesn’t have a viewfinder. I was just in the right place at the right time. But having the option to look into a viewfinder is something that as a storyteller really takes away all the noise of the environment. Overall I think this is a great camera for the minimalist.
